Favourite fungi 2008 - various - Alan Braddock

Lepiota fuscovinacea  Not rare but a super find, third Yorkshire record, from Ox Close.

Geastrum pectinatum  I had the idea of cutting this in half to expose its inner working. Again an unusual find, which appeared twice during 2008.

Rhodocybe gemina  A Red Data List species, found in dozens on the Potteric Carr foray. This is as big as a large Lactarius and will be obvious if it turns up anywhere but we were pushed to identify it, nobody had seen it before.

Allopsalliota geesterani  I couldn't leave this out, even though it qualifies as 'Ugly mushroom of the year'. This was another from Potteric Carr, which is the only British site. First found at this site in 2004, since when it seems to appear regularly, often in quite large clusters from August to November. It is a dark purple in colour, difficult to see in the earth and exudes reddish drops from the gills if broken. For more detail, see Field Mycology Vol 6 [3].
