Fungi in December - Andrew Woodall

One of my best memories of foraying in 2006 was the winter walk on 2 December leaving from Alan and Enid Braddock's house. We did not really expect to find much. It was hoped to be more of a social gathering, though there were only six of us on the day. The draw was a pleasant winter walk and the prospect of some of Enid's home cooking. All that went as expected and Alan and Enid's hospitality was much appreciated after a fairly long walk, by forayers' standards, on a lovely cold day. What was a real bonus was the number of species of fungi found. I think it was over fifty and we are not talking about micros. These were proper toadstools, puffballs and brackets. I think what it does show is that it is worth extending the foraying season well in to December. It also, alas, is probably yet another phenological sign of global warming. Many thanks to Alan and Enid for organising it and let's try to do something similar in December 2007.
